Honouring Nigel Gout: Chair of Trustees & Co-Founder of Greensand Multi Academy Trust
As we bid farewell to Nigel Gout, our Chair of Trustees, we reflect on the incredible impact he has had on our Trust. Nigel's dedication, kindness and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on all of us.
Nigel first started as a Governor of Reigate School 23 years ago, then becoming Chair of Governors at Reigate School, before co-founding Greensand Multi Academy Trust and becoming its Chair of Trustees.
About 10 years ago, Nigel, as the Chair of Governors at Reigate School made the brave and strategic decision to create a local Multi Academy Trust (MAT). He chaired the group of local Headteachers and Chairs of Governors through a two-year process, leading to the opening of Greensand Multi Academy Trust on 1st November 2017. Nigel suggested the name "Greensand," inspired by the Greensand Way, a stunning long distance walking route that runs through our local area. He led the creation of our scheme of delegation and all original statutory policies. His thoughtful and warm approach to the process ensured that every decision was made with the best interests of our children, staff and local community.
Known for his integrity, Nigel has held us all accountable, ensuring that resources have been used effectively and educational standards met or exceeded. During the challenging times of COVID-19, Nigel chaired the Crisis Committee, streamlining governance to ensure swift and consistent decision-making. His ability to challenge when things were wrong helped us maintain high standards and strive for continuous improvement. Nigel is skilled in meetings, preparing meticulously in advance, keeping the agenda on track, listening carefully during the meetings, ensuring that the expertise of others is utilised and that everyone has the opportunity to voice their opinions. His follow-up ensured that every detail was considered, all decisions clarified and nothing was overlooked.
Nigel's thoughtful gestures, like poinsettias and biscuits at Christmas, together with his genuine care for everyone, has made our community feel valued and heard. During his time with us, He has attended over 400 meetings and events, including children's performances, Headteacher leaving events, Ofsted meetings and disciplinary panels, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the Trust and local community.
Always a friend, Nigel has been there to listen, advise, support and challenge. He always noticed when we needed a boost and wasn't afraid to tell us when we needed to be challenged. His balanced approach fostered an environment where innovation and excellence could flourish.
Nigel's role as Chair of Trustees was entirely voluntary, yet he approached it with the utmost professionalism and dedication. His volunteer efforts have been instrumental in shaping our Trust and ensuring its success. Education relies heavily on the selfless contributions of volunteers like Nigel, who give so much of their time and expertise to make a difference.
We all hold him in extremely high regard, he absolutely embodies the concept of a trustee, in that everyone trusts him and we have always been reassured to be in his safe hands.
Nigel, your kindness, thoughtfulness and unwavering dedication have been a source of inspiration for us all. We can't imagine the Trust without you, but we are forever grateful for the legacy you leave behind.
Thank you for everything.
We look forward to announcing Greensand’s new Chair of Trustees in due course.
