Thank A Teacher Day 2026

Each year, National Thank a Teacher Day offers a moment to recognise the extraordinary contribution teachers make to our lives. Whilst the day falls on 17th June, their impact is felt throughout the year.

At Greensand MAT, our purpose is to help children step into their greatness, to enrich their lives, and to support the lifelong development of pursuits that they love. These are not abstract ideas; they are brought to life every day through the work of teachers and staff across our schools.

Teaching is built on care, dedication and commitment, not just to learning, but to children, families and communities. Teachers support, challenge and inspire; they nurture confidence as well as knowledge. At times it can feel like a thankless role, which is why days like this matter, reminding us to acknowledge the difference great teaching makes in shaping futures.

Many of us can recall a teacher who had a profound impact on us. I feel fortunate to have had several, and it was no surprise to those who knew me that I chose a career in education.

Two teachers, in particular, stand out.

Mrs McGoldrick, my Year 3 and 4 teacher in a small mixed-class primary school, brought creativity and enthusiasm to every lesson. She made learning exciting and meaningful, always adding imaginative touches that encouraged us to aim higher. I left each day feeling proud, with the beginnings of a sense of achievement and my own potential. Though she will have retired many years ago, her influence remains, and I am deeply grateful.

The second is Ms John, my secondary drama teacher. I have always loved the performing arts but she broadened my understanding of theatre through lessons, trips and productions, nurturing a passion that endures today. Her ambition and creativity showed us that great ideas are driven by imagination and determination, not circumstance and budget. From building a pool in the drama studio to transforming the school hall into a forest, she proved that with the right mindset, the seemingly impossible can be achieved. She did more than teach drama; she instilled confidence and belief in us.

On National Thank a Teacher Day, I recognise that these stories are not unique. Across our schools and communities, teachers and other school staff are quietly shaping futures every day, often without recognition, but always with impact. They are helping children to step into their greatness, enriching their lives, and nurturing the lifelong passions that will stay with them well beyond their school years.

So today, we say a heartfelt thank you to every teacher, in every classroom, past and present. Your influence extends far beyond the classroom, living on in the confidence you build, the curiosity you spark and the lives you help shape.

Thank you.
